BEHIND THE SMILES - PARVATHA DHARSHINI P (3rd Year BA.LLB)

In today’s fast-changing world, the words ‘stress’ and ‘depression’ are becoming more common, especially among young people. What often goes unnoticed is the emotional burden hidden behind everyday smiles. Many young individuals face silent struggles that rarely get attention or understanding. Several factors contribute to this rising mental strain. Intense school competition, uncertainty about future jobs, high family expectations, relationship issues, and the culture of comparison fuelled by social media can create overwhelming pressure. When these demands go beyond what someone can handle, mental health starts to decline.

The effects show up in different ways. A person may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, withdraw from social interactions, feel persistent hopelessness, or have disrupted sleep patterns, such as sleeping too much or struggling with insomnia. Recognising these signs early is key for getting timely help.

Dealing with stress and depression takes honesty and bravery. Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or mentor can provide immediate emotional relief. Professional counselling and psychological support offer structured guidance and coping strategies. Additionally, regular exercise, mindful limits on social media use, and consistent self-care practices significantly boost resilience. Mental health is not a luxury; it is a foundation for living, learning, and growing. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but an act of strength and self-respect.

If we want to promote a healthier generation, we must make conversations about emotional pain as normal as discussions about physical illness. No examination, expectation, or comparison is more important than your well-being. You deserve support, understanding, and hope. Even in the darkest times, remember that change is possible and help is out there.

Take care of yourself, because you matter!
